Ruth Lapid-Gortzak, MD, PhD

Dr. Lapid is a cataract, cornea, and refractive surgeon at the Amsterdam University Medical Center in Amsterdam (University of Amsterdam) as well as in private practice (www.retina.nl). She graduated from the Hadassah and Hebrew University Medical School in Jerusalem, winning an award for her MD thesis.

Dr. Lapid did her residency in ophthalmology at the Soroka University Medical Center in Beer Sheba. A fellowship in cornea and external diseases with Prof. Rootman and Prof. Slomovic at the University of Toronto in Canada. Dr. Lapid obtained her PhD in “visual quality improvements in refractive surgery” at the University of Amsterdam.

In 2018 she was granted membership at the International Intraocular Implant Club (IIIC). She is a member of the Board of the Netherlands’ Intra Ocular Implant Club since 2013.

Dr. Ruth Lapid is an expert in multifocal IOL implantations, complicated cataract and cornea surgeries, anterior segment reconstruction, and refractive surgery. She is active in academic research in cataract and refractive surgery outcome studies and straylight studies in refractive surgery.

She is also involved in experimental cornea surgery, such as the first-in-human study with the EndoArt artificial corneal endothelium. In addition, Dr. Lapid acts as an ophthalmic device development expert with ophthalmic device industries and start-ups.

She teaches residents, fellows, medical and PhD students at the Ophthalmology Department at the Amsterdam UMC.
